Within Our Gates (1920)
About this film
I've been researching newly public domain films from 1929 and earlier, so I'm uploading the best possible copies that I can find. The oldest surviving film from an African-American director, Within Our Gates follows a young woman as she learns about her family history and what it means to be a black woman in 1920's America. The picture was thought of as a minor hit on release, and modern reviews have especially found much to praise from the film.
