About this film
The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for September 2015: George Jefferson Gaskin was one of the artist pioneers who started right away with the dawn of commercial recordings. His bright tenor voice seem to have corresponded well with the early technical equipment and usually came out quite clear. This particular brown wax cylinder by an unknown manufacturer, possibly United States Phonograph Co., is a good example of what one could expect with his recording performances. The sound characteristics of the recorded vowels date this likely to 1896, very probably pre-1897. The distinctive thunk noise at the end indicates this record to be a pantographic copy, apparently well done. The faint background music at the beginning was likely recorded over by a previous owner, something found quite often on early brown wax cylinders. Unfortunately, other recordings were also often almost destroyed that way. Thanks to research by Christian Zwarg, the song could be identified as Boys, she's a Dream! Music by Maurice Levi and words by Harry Dillon, first published in 1896 - a perfect match.
