About this film

The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for October 2006: According to old catalogs, this brown wax cylinder was recorded by the United States Phonograph Company, dates from circa 1895 and runs at 125 revolutions per minute. The announcement says: "Selection entitled, 'The Old Folks at Home', as sung by the Manhansett Quartette" The Manhansett Quartette was lead by the popular brown wax artist George J. Gaskin who also made the announcement for this recording. Immediately after the announcement you can hear some 'irregulations' on the groove. This is likely caused by an interruption between the announcement and the performance. By 1895 this had become a new feature to reduce the delay time till the music started. The announcement would have been done at first, then all recording machines (somewhat 6-10) would be stopped and started again later when the performers were ready. Due to its age and wear the recording is quiet as a somewhat noisy, but still seems to be enjoyable as I think. Thanks to Glenn Sage from tinfoil.com for dating information.
