The Grey Fox is a Canadian film released in 1982 , directed by Philip Borsos . Based on the true story of Bill Miner , a skilled stagecoach robber, it explores his life after a lengthy incarceration and his attempts to adapt to a rapidly changing world.The film begins in 1901 , after Miner (played by Richard Farnsworth ) is released from prison after serving 33 years . He initially struggles to adjust to the modern world, which is vastly different from the Wild West he once knew. Determined to return to his old ways, he successfully executes a railway heist and goes on the run in British Columbia . During his flight, he develops a romantic relationship with Katherine Flynn (played by Jackie Burroughs ), a progressive photographer.
