About this film

A rare K. Gordon Murray children's matinee classic. As with most of his films, this is a foreign import (originally a 1964 German adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale titled Die Goldene Gans ) that Murray purchased the distribution rights to on the cheap and had reedited and redubbed into English. In typical Murray fashion, the dialogue is mostly gibberish intended to vaguely match the original mouth movements, with a narrator voice-over filling in the gaps, though this one is slightly more coherent and straightforward compared to some of his more (in)famous Mexican imports like Santa Claus vs. The Devil , Puss in Boots , and Little Red Riding Hood Meets the Monsters . All copies of Murray's films were seized by the IRS in 1979 and pulled from distribution, so while the original language versions still exist, the American dubs are rather rare. A few copies were transferred from 16mm print to VHS for public release in the early 90's, but the company that held the prints went out of business and liquidated their holdings to the public, so aside from stumbling across an old copy in a decaying pile of VHS tapes, most of these matinee classics are now effectively "lost".
