About this film

Marian Michael Morrison had barely left behind his football days at the University of Southern California & changed his name to John Wayne when he found himself in starring in the first of a seemingly lifelong series of Western Adventure movies. Wayne's first big contract came from the Lone Star Company, which had originally been formed during the First World War as a producing facility for Charlie Chaplin's great two reel comedies. In 1933, Lone Star signed the young John Wayne for a series of westerns, of which THE DESERT TRAIL is one of the last. THE DESERT TRAIL is the traditional "Oater" of Hollywood lore, which this time finds the Duke as a star rodeo performer battling his friend for the favors of a pretty girl. In the midst of all this excitement, they somehow also find time to bring to justice a couple of holdup artists who have been prowling the local environs. An early look at one of the cinema's true superstars, THE DESERT TRAIL presents John Wayne at the dawn of his career, but with all the recognizable traits already in place that would eventually make him one of a handful of international superstars.
