This is perhaps John Philip Sousa's greatest march. Although he felt that the phonograph would take away from America and musicians, John Philip Sousa was rather pleased with the profits that he received from recordings. His concern that demand recorded music would take away from the musical chest and would hurt the amateur musician. He called this form of music "canned music" and coined the phrase. Sousa's band was one of the first to make commercial records in the early 1890's, but he would not conduct the band while recording. Arthur Prior usually did the conducting. It wasn't until about 1926 that John Sousa would direct his band in a recording.
