About this film
Ariadne auf Naxos: Arie und Rondo der Zerbinetta (Richard Strauss) (2 parts) Monarch Record Gramophone 043221 / 043222 Matrix Nr. 330 aL / 332 aL Adelaide ANDREJEWA (later VON SKILONDZ) - Sopran (& Orch.) rec. 6.III.1913 Note: The Opera „Ariadne auf Naxos“ by Richard Strauss was in its first version planned as a postlude to the theatre piece „Der Bürger als Edelmann“ (Le Bourgois Gentilhomme) by Moliere. In this version it was played first on Oct. 25th, 1912 in Stuttgart and 1913 in Berlin. These recordings here were made in the context of the Berlin premiere on Feb.7th, 1913, even if the singers there were different (Hermine Bosetti as Zerbinetta and Hafren-Waag as Ariadne) from the ones recorded here. Strauss later changed the piece because of the problems of the collaboration between theatre and opera and made an opera without theatre of it. The second changed version was first played on Oct. 4th, 1916 in Vienna and is still played today. The grand air of Zerbinetta was also simplified by Strauss because it was hard to sing. There are only three singers who recorded this first version of Zerbinettas aria between 1913 and 1916 (Skilondz, Bosetti and Francillo-Kaufmann).
