Run Silent, Run Deep is a 1958 American black-and-white war film directed by Robert Wise . The movie stars Clark Gable as Commander P.J. "Rich" Richardson and Burt Lancaster as Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe. It is based on the novel of the same name by Edward L. Beach Jr. , and it delves into the psychological and strategic complexities of submarine warfare during World War II . The story follows Commander Richardson , whose submarine was sunk by the Japanese destroyer Akikaze , led by the infamous captain known as "Bungo Pete." Obsessed with revenge, Richardson persuades the Navy to reassign him to a new submarine, the USS Nerka , where he faces a reluctant crew, led by Bledsoe, who was expecting to take command himself. Despite the tension between the two men, Richardson's fixation on destroying the Akikaze leads to rigorous and exhausting training for the crew, ultimately taking them back to the lethal waters of the Bungo Straits .
