Der Bürger als Edelmann [Vorspiel zu Ariadne auf Naxos]: Menuett und Szene des Fechtmeisters (Richard Strauss) Monarch Record Gramophone 040743 Matrix Nr. 348 aL NEUES TONKÜNSTLER-ORCHESTER (unknown conductor) rec. 20.III.1913 On the other side: 040744 Auftritt und Tanz der Schneider Note: The Opera „Ariadne auf Naxos“ by Richard Strauss was in its first version planned as a postlude to the theatre piece „Der Bürger als Edelmann“ (Le Bourgois Gentilhomme) by Moliere. In this version it was played first on Oct. 25th, 1912 in Stuttgart and 1913 in Berlin. These recordings here were made in the context of the Berlin premiere on Feb.7th, 1913. Strauss later changed the piece because of the problems of the collaboration between theatre and opera and made an opera without theatre of it. The second changed version was first played on Oct. 4th, 1916 in Vienna and is still played today.
