About this film

Footage of Musamoni Panigrahi narrating a folklore titled "Budhara Kukura Budhira Biradi" in Baleswari, the northern variant/dialect of the Odia language, recorded for the oral history documentation that was used 2022 documentary film "Nani Ma". Born in the 1920s in a tiny coastal hamlet in the Balasore district, Musamoni never received schooling, and her early marriage brought her early widowhood. At a time of personal tragedy, she embraced Mahima Dharma, a faith system founded and led by Adivasi and Dalit leaders, which would change her perspectives in life. “Nani Ma” is a documentary based on her own rendition of folklore and songs from the early 1900s, recorded for the first time in 2014 and 2015 when she was still around.
