About this film

B-roll video of Musamoni Panigrahi speaking quietly while removing dry coconut leaves from the midribs to make brooms, during the oral history recording of 2022 documentary film "Nani Ma". Born in the 1920s in a tiny coastal hamlet in the Balasore district, Musamoni never received schooling, and her early marriage brought her early widowhood. At a time of personal tragedy, she embraced Mahima Dharma, a faith system founded and led by Adivasi and Dalit leaders, which would change her perspectives in life. “Nani Ma” is a documentary based on her own rendition of folklore and songs from the early 1900s, recorded for the first time in 2014 and 2015 when she was still around.
