Federal Highway Administration Video VH-554 HMA for the Year 2000: Understanding Superpave Mix Design This video promotes and explains the basics of the Superpave (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavement) mix design process from selection of the aggregate, binder and modifier, to the selection of the design-aggregate structure, and finally to the selection of the design asphalt binder content. Material selection is explained, covering the new asphalt binder grading system which incorporates climatic conditions into the pavement specification and consensus based aggregate properties. Video demonstrates and explains the new method for laboratory compaction, and the required mix evaluation processes. Overall, an excellent introduction to the Superpave performance-based asphalt binder specifications and volumetric mix design and analysis process.
