About this film

Oregon Department of Transportation Video VH-174 Timber Bridge Inspection in Oregon This video shows how to inspect a timber bridge. In addition to inspecting two bridges -- one of them extremely deteriorated -- the video demonstrates how condition ratings are determined. It begins with an introduction to the bridge inspection form and the rating scale. A bridge inspector describes his equipment, then the viewer is walked through the full inspection: approach, signage, pavement, fellow guard, railing, deck, timber stringers, piling, and channel. A drill and geologist's pick are used to detect rot, and guidance is given for test boring to determine the extent of rot.
