About this film

LibriVox recording of Giants in the Earth by O. E. Rolvaag. (Translated by Lincoln Colcord.) Read in English by Tom Shoesmith. A founding tale of the American heartland, Giants in the Earth tells the story of a small group of Norwegian pioneers who settle in the Dakota Territory, in 1873. They arrive with nothing, build sod houses, and over the years coax a living from the vast prairie. Per Hansa, his wife Beret, and their fellow settlers struggle to plant their first crops, care for each other and the new children who arrive, and confront their own fears of the endless horizons. The novel is the first in a trilogy and is based on the author’s own experiences as a settler as well as the those of his wife's family who had been immigrant homesteaders on the American prairie. - Summary by tshoes76 For further information, including links to online text, reader information, RSS feeds, CD cover or other formats (if available), please go to the LibriVox catalog page for this recording.
