From RISK to ACTION: Women and HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia
About this film
Nearly 60% of HIV+ individuals in Ethiopia are women. UNAIDS has estimated that approximately three quarters of all women infected with HIV/AIDS live in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2009, there were approximately 12 million women living with HIV and AIDS, compared to about 8.2 million men. (source) Gender bias and the biology of transmission have led to women being more vulnerable than men to become infected. Poverty, lack of access to education, and violence against women increase the risk. This film profiles the connection between gender and HIV/AIDS, as well as the work of leaders in education and policy change to improve the status of women. All public, educational, and government access television stations (PEG) and community media stations have permission to broadcast this film and any of Dorothy Fadiman's other films .
