About this film
Sanborn House - The Beaux-Arts style Sanborn House, designed by Hill & James, was built in 1906-1907 by Oren Sanborn. Oren was the son of Jame Sanborn who started the Chase & Sanborn Coffee Company. The House was called Aigremnt by Oren and his wife Rena. By the early 1920's, Financial conditions forced the Sanborn's to sell Aigremont. The House was ultimately bought by the Downes family and remained the family home for the next twenty years. In the 1940's the Downes' sold the House to the Religious of Christian Education, an order of nuns who used the house as a residence and stablished an all-girls Catholic school called Marycliff Academy. The town of Winchester Massachusetts bought the Sanborn House and the Marycliff Academy in 1969, and over the years the House was used as offices for several Town departments. In 1980 the Sanborn House was placed on the National Historic Register. Since 2006 it has been the home of the Winchester Historical Society. Every Christmas holiday season the Winchester Historical Society holds their annual gathering and decorates the house for the occasion.
