About this film

Very interesting film about Amsterdam's busy harbour nearly a century ago. This is originally a film in three parts from which my previous film about Amsterdam's old city center was derived. Unfortunately some parts of the original footage were damaged. Therefore the most damaged frames have been removed by means of software. Amsterdam is the second largest harbour in the Netherlands after Rotterdam. In past centuries it was connected to the North Sea via the Zuiderzee. However, in 1928 the Zuiderzee was closed-off by a 28 km long dyke ("De Afsluitdijk"). Fortunately Amsterdam still has access to the Northsea via a 21km long canal ("Het Noordzeekanaal") that was dug mainly by hand between 1863 and 1876 when it was opened by the Dutch King Willem III. In another of my films you can see the construction of the huge sea locks in this canal. At 16:19 you see a huge model of the Amsterdam harbour (it looks like an aerial view). This film has been motion-stabilized, speed-corrected, enhanced and colorized by means of sophisticated A.I. software. Watch my welcome video on this channel to see how much is involved to get the best restoration results. For those who are technically interested…
