The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for February 2016: Franz Porten, one of the German recording artist pioneers was very active at the beginning of the 20th century. This ca. 1902 recording made for the Columbia Phonograph Company in Berlin is particularly interesting as it represents his outstanding vocal abilities much better than most of the other recordings do. A plain piano accompaniment was used for classical recordings in most cases on cylinder recorded before 1906. It usually allows the listener to follow the vocal interpretation more closely.
