Chadwick Stokes played Aprés Only in Stowe, VT. This was my second time recording at the venue, so I knew to wear my long underwear (though next time I may need hand warmers in my boots). The team at the venue was incredibly accommodating and supportive of my efforts taping the show and encouraged me to come back anytime - thanks, John! The first half of the setlist featured requests from Chad’s daughter, evident in early appearances of Flying Horses and Elias, which are more often found toward the end of most sets. Longtime listeners know that I place a high value on crowd energy, and Vermont never disappoints. Despite a few drunk chatterboxes unfortunately close to my mics, the crowd was packed with die-hards singing along through most of the night. I was especially excited to see the crowd erupt when Chad played Cry Out, a song from the new 1972 Rock Opera currently in development. The standout moments of the show for me were the two songs featuring Van Gordon Martin on resonator. I hadn’t heard his music before his opening set, but I had the chance to connect with him and Chad before the show and learned that Van played lead guitar on my favorite track from the new Dispatch alb…
