AudioAnother Study of Woman
About this film
LibriVox recording of Another Study of Woman by Honoré de Balzac. (Translated by Ellen Marriage; Gertrude Bell.) Read in English by Nicholas Clifford The scene is a Parisian dinner party in the France of Louis Philippe (the July Monarchy, we’re in the late 1830s or early 1840s). Three men tell tales about woman in general or particular women in their lives. The party includes women and some men who are not French; but it is the French men who do almost all the talking (France, we must realize, is of course, the only country in which conversation is raised to the form of high art). These stories later formed part of Balzac’s enormous compendium which he called The Human Comedy. Missing from the English translation here is a fourth story that belongs together with the first three: La Grande Bretèche, which will be read separately.
