The Toxic Politics of Science (2013-05-17)
About this film
With everything we know by now about toxic lead poisoning, surely we're being protected, or at least armed with enough information to protect ourselves, right? Wrong, say public health historians David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz, authors of the published book LEAD WARS: THE POLITICS OF SCIENCE AND THE FATE OF AMERICA'S CHILDREN. Bill Moyers talks with Rosner and Markowitz who say that contrary to previous thinking, even miniscule amounts of lead can cause neurological damage in children. Some corporations have responded by injecting junk science and unfounded skepticism into the debate to protect their profits at the cost of public health. Over 500,000 American children still have too much lead in their blood, according to Rosner and Markowitz's research, and they say it's only part of an overall environmental assault that preys heavily on poor and working class communities.
