[Description from the original press release] An outstanding poet, an eminent historian, and a highly respected authority on Native Americans, Nebraska's late Poet Laureate John G. Neihardt is profiled in an hour-long documentary, Voice of the Plains: John G. Neihardt. Produced by the Cultural Affairs Unit of University of Nebraska Television, the documentary paints a portrait of the man and his philosophy for Nebraskans to cherish. Ron Hull, NETV program manager (on leave with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting), narrates from Neihardt's study in Bancroft, Nebraska, where much of A Cycle of the West—a collection of five volumes of poetry in historical sequence—was written. Neihardt received numerous honors during his lifetime, including honorary degrees from the Universities of Nebraska and Missouri, and from Creighton University. As a journalist, he was literary editor for the Minneapolis Journal, the Kansas City Journal, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. His most well-known work is likely Black Elk Speaks.
