Dr. G. Orville Johnson is a professor of special education, Syracuse University. Before joining the Syracuse faculty, he was director of the New York State Research Project on Severely Retarded Children. He holds membership in the American Association on Mental Deficiency, American Psychological Association, and the International Council on Exceptional Children. The mentally handicapped child often lives in a confused and unrewarding world. His mental limitations make it difficult for him to cope with common situations. Dr. Johnson, a prominent worker for 20 years with mentally handicapped children, explains the problems these children and the need for a society that will accept them and recognize the contributions which they can make.
