[Description from the original press release] "The Return of the Sacred Pole," a new Nebraska ETV production, tells the story of the Omaha tribe and its reclaiming of the Sacred Pole, a spirit-endowed artifact that has been held for the past 100 years by the Peabody Museum at Harvard University. The 30-minute program, narrated by Nebraska folklorist Roger Welsch, recounts the story of the washabagle or "venerable one" as the Omaha call the Sacred Pole, its importance to the Omaha's heritage, its stay at the Peabody and its return to its owners. Featured in the program are Doran Morris, Omaha Tribal chair; Edward Cline, former Omaha Tribal chair; Dennis Hastings, Omaha Tribal historian; Dr, Robin Riddington, anthropologist at the University of British Columbia; Dr, Ian Brown, curator of Native American collections, Peabody Museum; and Dr. Joan Mark, biographer of Alice Fletcher. "The Return of the Sacred Pole" was produced by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Television Cultural Affairs Unit for broadcast on Nebraska ETV.
