Philanthropy and the Conservative Movement (1999-10-04)
About this film
Both in his own person and as head of the Olin Foundation, Mr. Simon was one of the country's leading philanthropists, and superbly qualified to discuss proposals, such as one recently made by Governor George W. Bush, to pump-prime private philanthropy through government action. WFB: "When Reagan left office, 19.8 per cent of GDP was going into the Federal Government. It's now 21.8. That's a very substantial rise. So that notwithstanding what Mr. Clinton said, that the age of big government is over, in fact, government continues to swell, right?" WES: "The fact of the matter is,... you have to work until May now before you keep your own money. May 11, I think it was last year. Now think of that! You are working five months for government before you can work for yourselves. That's too much right there, so let's not talk about more of a government bite, more of a government take on anything."
