The Roman Emperor Constantine did not officially become a Catholic until he was on his death bed. However, during his reign, he did decree that Christianity was to be tolerated throughout the empire, and under him, the first ecumenical conference the Council of Nicaea, was convened. He strengthened the Christian position to such a degree that in 395 Ad. Emperor Theodosius proclaimed Christianity the only lawful religion in the Roman Empire. Conceit: Suppose the Emperor Constantine had not been tolerant of Christianity during his reign. How would this have changed the course of religious history? Andrew Johnson became President of the United States the day following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He attempted to carry out his predecessors reconstruction policies, but he lacked Lincolns tact and soon inflamed the radical Republicans who wanted more vindictive action. When the congressional elections went against Johnson, the radicals felt they had a mandate to treat the South and the president more harshly.
