US Secretary of State Dean Rusk declared tonight that even if he had foreseen 17 years ago that the situation in Vietnam would boil to its present stage, he would still have upheld the US commitment in Southeast Asia. Appearing in the first episode of National Educational Televisions new public affairs series the Presidents Men. Secretary Rusk said, It was my view in the late 1940s that the security of Southeast Asia was vital to the security of the free world I would not not since 1948 or 49 would I myself have advised an American president to get out of Southeast Asia or to neglect the vital interest of the free world in the security of Southeast Asia. Secretary Rusks remarks were made in an exclusive interview with Washington correspondent and series host Paul Niven. As to whether he envisioned a settlement that the US and Communists could both accept at the end of the conflict barring a total western or US military victory, Secretary Rusk said, Well, weve made it pretty clear that we ourselves are not intent upon destroying the regime in Hanoi or the regime in Peiping.
