About this film

This program is devoted to an historical treatment of the views regarding the origin and nature of man. Dr. Mortimer Adler begins with the traditional view regarding man from time of the Greeks to the 19th Centurythe ancient view that man descended from godssubstantiated through the middle ages down to 1850. The contemporary view, which is prevalent today, regarding the nature of man, did not become popular until the end of the 19th Century. This changing viewpoint came with Darwins theory and has been developed by modern sciences view of man. Dr. Adler discusses the seriousness of the issue and points out that it involves science, philosophy and religion. The issue divides the East and West; he points out that the deepest rift between India and the West lies in the question of whether man is the only sacred animal, the only animal whose life is sacred or are other animals sacred and man not? In this program Dr. Adler states the position he holds and states that it can be proved that the Darwin thesis is wrong through reason, not faith. He points out that he will present both sides of the question fairly and impartially. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
