About this film

In this episode of the MacNeil/Lehrer report, James Lehrer and Charlayne Hunter-Gault talk with guests about the breaking farmer's strike. Recent droughts and price depressions in the southern and Great Plains regions of the United States drove about one third of America's farmers to strike early on the morning of December 14th, 1977. Topics include motivations behind the strike, food price and production economics, and the farmer's chances of having their complaints addressed. Guests include a leader of the agriculture movement, Bud Bitner, and the Director of Agriculture Economics for the Department of Agriculture, Howard Hjort.
