About this film
On this episode of “Illustrated Daily,” American popular music has long been dominated by national and international trends and superstar performers, but right down here where we live there is a long and impressive popular music tradition featuring local musicians. Their music embraces a wide range of musical styles, and you can find them working in any number of places including restaurants, bars, and nightclubs like this Corrales, New Mexico establishment. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, for some of us I suspect the period of our greatest mischief, this place was a sort of Mecca for local popular music fans. Among the many talented musicians who made their music in this place in those days were two brothers: Hank and Lewie Wickham. The Wickhams achieved a kind of modest national following not too long ago, but the roots were always local, and their music was an original combination of Country Southwestern Folk rock. Featuring local musicians: Frank Nieto and the Rock Canyon Boys, Linda Cotton and Street Life, Baby Gaby, Mrs. Bennie Sanchez, Al Hurricane, Sr., and Tiny Morrie. Host: Hal Rhodes.
