Harry Embree was 104 at the time of his interview and the last surviving veteran of the Spanish American War of 1898. He explains that he volunteered for service for the Spanish American War because he felt he was needed. Embree recalls that the Philippines was a completely different world, and one that surprised him. Although he willingly enlisted in the army, Embree himself was unaware of why he was being deployed to the Philippines. Embree felt that, upon leaving the Philippines, that the US military efforts led to success, stating that they had freed Filipinos from Spanish control.
