About this film

This episode of At Week's End with Neil Boggs discusses The Proposed Indian Center for Excellence. At Week's End looks at Senate Bill 15 which would appropriate $100,000 for the construction of an Indian Center of Excellence as part of the Santa Fe Indian School. The center would attempt to assess the diverse needs of New Mexico's Native American students. There are now 60,000 Indian students attending public schools in 19 of the state's districts, but problems of drop out and low test scores are common. And of the few who do attend colleges, few remain in school to acquire a degree. The problem, officials say is in the public school system and its inability to meet the needs of the state's Native American students. The cultural irrelevancy of the current curriculum is among the reasons given for the lack of Indian achievement in education. Guests: Regis Pecos (executive director, New Mexico Bureau of Indian Affairs) and Hayes Lewis (Superintendent, Zuni Public School District). For the Week's Review segment with Roger Morris events and news from the week are discussed, including: Legislature: Dollars and Sense; Taking Out the Trash; and Surviving Cuts: Blessing or Curse?
