Immigration Reform in Louisiana (2010-10-27)
About this film
In April, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law immigration enforcement bill S.B. 1070 to combat what supporters say the state has become - "the superhighway for illegal border crossings and drug trafficking in the United States." The Louisiana Attorney General's Office has joined Michigan's Amicus brief in support of Arizona "due to an important issue relating to state's sovereignty." And two Louisiana lawmakers have indicated they will be drafting immigration enforcement legislation for the 2011 session. So, how much of a problem is illegal immigration in Louisiana and are current laws not doing enough to address the situation? The panelists include: Sen. Neil Riser, R- Columbia, Chair of the Senate Labor & Industrial Relations Committee; Kathleen Gasparian, Immigration Attorney, David Ware & Associates; and Susan Mary Weishar, Ph.D., Migration Specialist, Loyola Jesuit Social Research Institute.
