About this film

1979 filmed interview with Lawrence Guyot for America, They Loved You Madly, a precursor to Eyes on the Prize. Guyot was CORE project director and chairman of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP). Guyot discusses the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), civil rights activism in Mississippi, being brutalized by police in Winona, Mississippi, the MFDP, and being an MFDP delegate to the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Guyot also challenges the narrative that the violence of the Selma march secured the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He argues that the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party's efforts to unseat the all-white Mississippi delegation to the Democratic Nation Convention in 1964 played a critical, overlooked role.
