[Description from Choice Magazine] Before the first wave of settlers descended upon the Western Plains, a German prince and a Swiss-born artist set out to document the area in words and pictures. Their remarkable expedition is re-created in Maximilian's Journey, airing Monday, November 19, at 9:30 p.m. and again on Friday, November 23, at 8 a.m. The journey began in the spring of 1833 when scientist Prince Maximilian of Wied, accompanied by artist Karl Bodmer, boarded the steamboat Yellowstone and traveled up the Missouri River. From St. Louis to the Rockies, the travelers painstakingly recorded the West in all its pristine glory. While Prince Maximilian wrote his detailed observations of life in America, especially among the Plains Indians, the young artist served in the same capacity as a modern-day photographer, recording scenes in pencil and watercolors. Bodmer's landscapes so faithfully documented the varied character of the frontier that landmarks he painted can still be identified today. Prince Maximilian's and Bodmer's unique record of early western exploration was purchased by Northern Natural Gas Company in 1962 and placed in the custody of Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. The…
