About this film

National Archives description "330' Ballet - Japanese-style ballet routine designed on ordinary ballet steps except for the use of hands in the number. Girls wear shear costumes instead of traditional western puffed skirts used in ballet. Ordinarily ballet shoes would be worn, but with the lack of supplies, the number was danced barefoot. 186' Rocket Number - Styled after the famous New York Rockettes, this number features the first year students in the intricate and complex Rockette-style dance patterns. The section entailing use of arms and legs is one of the most difficult ever attempted. This dance is a study in precision dancing. 221' "Parasol" scene from finale - This section from the finale shows the girls in their maiko-type costumes, illustrating particularly the use of parasols (kasa) in their dances."
