Broad adaptation of Irwin Shaw's best-selling WW2 novel which traces the lives if two US Army enlisted men and a German army officer. Outstanding cast. A powerful and insightful film. However it was widely criticized for its many departures from Shaw's novel. CAST NOTE: Dean Martin's first dramatic role. It was considered to be his comeback film after the split with Jerry Lewis.
