A dark drama about the underside of New York life where peoples' destinies are controlled by a ruthless, all-powerful Broadway columnist (Lancaster). Tony Curtis as a sleazy press agent turns in the dramatic performance of his career. "Sweet Smell of Success" was a critical success but a box office failure. TRIVIA: Burt Lancaster's character was based on the syndicated New York columnist Walter Winchell. The narc, played by Emile Meyer, was based on NYPD detective Eddie Egan who would be immortalized as Popeye Doyle in "The French Connection." CAST NOTE: Veteran TV actor David White's film debut.
