Sophie Oreck - 2-Jul-2007 - Katrina's Jewish Voices
About this film
Sophie Oreck, the teenage daughter of Julie Wise Oreck and sister of Zoe, was interviewed in New Orleans, LA, on July 2, 2007. She and her mother, grandmother, and sister flew to Houston to escape the hurricane, and she attended a new school for the duration of her displacement. The bulk of the conversation was about her adjustment to the new school, as she recounts her social struggles and desire for normalcy in detail. She also describes her life as daughter of a prominent Jewish philanthropist. This oral history was conducted by Rosalind Hinton for a joint project by the Jewish Women's Archive partnered with the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL) to capture the voices and experiences of members of the Jewish communities of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast communities during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.
