Simone Moro, an Italian alpinist, was a 2002 recipient of the David Sowles Award. This award is given by the American Alpine Club to a climber who selflessly abandons their goals to aid another climber. During an attempt on the wall of Lhotse at 8000 metes he abandoned the climb to search, rescue and save English alpinist Tom Moores.
