About this film

Irish bagpipes solo, Emerald 7236 7 inch disk, NYC. Fitzpatrick was a Leitrim flute player who learned the Highland pipes as a teenager in Scotland, and took up the Irish pipes in America. He was a sucessful buisnessman who built a venue, Celtic Hall, in New York City, and also toured with various vaudeville companies. His simple lively piping, augmented by his intermittent taps and chords on his regulators, is typical of the pipers recorded in America at this time. This medley consists of three tunes, the Three Drops of Brandy (not related to the well known slip jig), the Flower of the Flock, and the Flogging Reel or "Floggan" as it was spelled on a similiar medley Fitzpatrick recorded the same year. He also recorded the Three Drops by itself on another disk that year, which is featured on this site as well. Patsy Touhey also recorded the Three Drops and the Flogging; his 78 recording of the latter tune influenced pipers such as Willie Clancy. Fitzpatrick plays an E instead of F# in the third part, which is occasionally heard on older recordings of this popular tune.
