About this film
A semi-fictionalized account of the infamous 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, which prosecuted a Tennessee high school teacher who had been arrested for teaching Darwin's Theory of Evolution. The screenplay's courtroom dialog is taken directly from the trial transcripts. Adapted from the long-running (805 performances) Tony Award winning play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. WHO'S REALLY WHO: Spencer Tracy's character (Henry Drummond) is really the famous trial lawyer Clarence Darrow. Fredric March's character (Matthew Brady) is really the three-time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan. Gene Kelly's character (E. K. Hornbeck) is really the iconoclast Baltimore journalist H. L. Mencken. Dick York's character (Bertram Cates) is really the accused teacher John Scopes. TRIVIA: The first in-flight movie shown on Trans-World Airlines. PERSONAL NOTE: That Fredric March wasn't even nominated for the best actor oscar is just one of the reasons I ignore the oscars.
