About this film
"Go ahead! Kiss me! Forget you're married to my sister." (tagline). A daring romantic melodrama for 1942 that stands up exceptionally well in 2016. It's justly praised for oscar-worthy performances by Davis and de Havilland and John Huston's dynamic direction. Soap opera raised to its highest level by a skillful adaptation of Ellen Glasgow's best-selling novel. TRIVIA: This film has a mixed reputation regarding US race relations. The following is quoted from IMDB: "Warner Bros. was named to the Honor Roll of Race Relations of 1942 because of its dignified portrayal of African-Americans in this film. However, scenes in which Ernest Anderson's's character was treated in a friendly fashion were cut for showings in the strictly segregated American South to avoid offending those viewers. The film was initially disapproved for export by the Office of Censorship in Washington, DC, because it suggests that the Negro's testimony would be totally disregarded by the jury when it was disputed by a white person, which, in the South at the time and for many years afterwards, was true." CAST NOTE: Walter Huston also appeared uncredited in John Huston's "The Maltese Falcon."
