About this film
Madame Butterfly: Solo and Humming Chorus (Puccini) 30 cm Columbia Record A 5105 Matrix Nr. 30153 Rena VIVIENNE - Sopran (& Orchestra & Chorus) rec. ca. 1908 Note : These are souvenirs from the first performance of „Madama Butterfly“ in the USA on 15.X.1906 at the Columbia Theatre in Washington. The company was called savage Opera Company. Rena Vivienne sang at the first performance the little role of Kate Pinkerton. In 1907/08 the Company was on tour through the USA. Now Rena Vivienne took the part of Madame Butterfly. Harriet Behnée (or recte Behnne) was surely a part of that company and the other singers on the records most probably, too. Eight recordings from that production were made on Columbia (four of them can be heard here – just follow key word „American Butterfly“). Kutsch/Riemens give as recording date 1907, the DAHR gives „ca. 1908“ or „ca. 1908-July 1909“.
