1995 American Expedition to Everest: John Meek Interview

Everyone I have interviewed in this noted climber collection for the American Alpine Club have had good stories, while others had great stories. An example of a great story would be Simone Moro, who gave up his quest to do the first traverse of Lohtse and Everest to aid another climber. The 1995 American Everest expedition is another great story, unusual in two details. First, the team included George Mallory II of Australia, grandson of the great British climber, George Mallory, who first attempted to reach the summit of Everest, eventually losing his life there. Second, the original 1995 team leaded, Dave Tollokson, was killed April 9, 1994 on Mt. San Jacinto near Palm Springs in a climbing accident before he could bag the last of his Seven Summits. But he did get to Everest when the team took his ashes and gave them to the wind on the top of this great mountain. Typical of climber modesty, members of the team interviewed in this video described their successful climb as if they had just run to Starbucks for a latté.
